European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
